Anam Cara Art Gallery will be presenting “Rhythms”, an exhibit of  artwork by Multi-media artist Norma Heslep. Heslep’s artwork includes painting, collages, pottery, jewelry and photography and is on display at the gallery in a show beginning on First Friday, September 5 through October 25.  The public is invited to “Meet the Artist” between 5:30 and 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 5 at the gallery at 204 State Street, Binghamton, NY.

Heslep studied Art and Design at Alfred University is a graduate of Binghamton University in Fine Arts and Painting.  She has taught Liberal Arts, Fine Arts and Design at Broome Community College since 2000, and has also taught at Wells College. 

Heslep has exhibited work in galleries and art museums throughout the Triple Cities as well as in Wellsboro, PA, Syracuse, Rochester, Corning, and the Arnot Art Museum in Elmira. 

Heslep works in a broad range of media including oil, watercolor, acrylic, drawing, collage photography, sculpture, pottery and a designer line of jewelry.  She employs “non-conventional” mediums such as cut up photos, transparencies, “intentional misuse” of conventional mediums.  An example is her “Liquid Abstracts” series of photographic images based on a multi-layered effect of several mediums, including her own paintings, the photography (without computer manipulation) as the last layer.

Regardless of the media, Heslep works largely in an abstract style that sometimes washes over into a surrealistic mode.

The History of Intarsia In Florence Italy at the beginning of the fifteenth century, artists such as Donatello, Masaccio, and Ghiberti discovered the optical laws of linear perspective.  These artists were the founders of the Renaissance.  Their techniques were quickly grasped by the woodworkers who visualized in the art of decorative wood inlay.  This work was known as Intarsia.  Intarsia artists were called masters of perspective.  They were adept at using light and dark shades of wood to form images.  This magnificent artwork was done to create paneling and murals in richly decorated study rooms in palaces for the leading figures in Italy during the Renaissance.  Some of these study rooms have been moved to the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City where they can be seen.  This intricate woodwork is being revived by craftsmen in this century. 

Painting with Wood  After studying and learning the techniques of intarsia, Jim Johnson began to experiment with bright colored exotic woods to form images.  He has developed a unique three dimensional style of intarsia.  There is no paint or stain used on his carvings.  A clear finish has been applied to the rich colors of wood.  He calls his style “painting with wood”
